Inspection System Goals
Purpose of the Inspection System
Simplify inspection process for maintenance personnel
Streamline inspection process
Modernize the inspection process through use of IETMs  instead of legacy paper manuals

Requirements of Inspection System
Core
Ability to download, interact with IETM based workorders for inspection tasks
Placement of virtual stickies
Upload virtual stickies to maintenance system
Capacity to operate in adverse conditions
Optional
Use of PEDD, HMD
Non standard, easy to use input device

Other “Fancy” Requirements
Wireless connection to maintenance system, AR model
Use of sophisticated data glove pointing device

A Day in the Life of a STARS Inspector
Overview
Typical tasks an Inspector would face
Scenario designed to show how basic functionality of inspection system will be achieved

The Day Begins
Inspector logs in to maintenance system to download workorders for the day
Connects, calibrates equipment
Logs out to begin performing inspection

Onward to the Hangar
Inspector arrives at plane to perform inspection on.
Steps through items in workorder recording discrepancies

A Problem Arises
Inspector records discrepancy information
Location recorded via AR interface

A Job Well Done
After completing work, inspector returns to maintenance depot
Stickies and workorders are downloaded to maintenance system

Boundaries of Inspection System
Concerned primarily with placement and recording of virtual stickies, display of workorders
Determination of location handled via AR
Display of airplane model information is the concern of AR
Speech recognition, synthesis technologies for system are handled by Repair team

Open Issues
Workorders
How created, authored
How related to stickies
Lifetime of workorders
New sub-team created to deal with these issues
Sticky placement technology
AR, Modeling teams are handling
Main interaction for Inspection system is through AR

Conclusion
STARS Inspection represents a significant advance over existing, paper-based inspection system
Easier to use, enhanced flow of information
Some open issues still, but these are being dealt with
