Serious Games
Serious Games are games with another purpose besides having fun. The goal is to utilize games as a motivational, but also to deepen understanding, when learning a new topic.
This is challenging, as it requires combining domain knowledge with game aesthetics. A serious game for learning can easily end up either not teaching anything or being a text book learning experience with some nice animations.
At this chair we are particularly interested in three topics around serious games:
- Integrating learning content and game design (endogeneous design)
- Social Interactions of competition and cooperation in serious games
- Adaptivity in serious games
- In the past we have cooperated with
- United Soft Media (http://www.usm.de/)
- Lehrstuhl für Pflanzenverwendung der Hochschule Weihenstephan-Triesdorf (http://www.hswt.de/person/swantje-duthweiler.html)

A manual-procedural activities (MPA) involves following the steps of a given workflow for manipulating the physical world. Examples include manual assembly, repair and maintenance, different crafts, cooking, etc. To learn an MPA the trainee needs to master both the steps of the procedure and the hand skills required for manipulating physical objects and the using the tools. TUMA: An Intelligent Tutoring System for Manual-Procedural Activities supports trainees in learning an MPA.
Multiple topics available in context of the TUMA project. For details of the topics please see my chair web page.
